Two Businesses. Same Service. Same City. Why Does One Get More Customers?

The Difference Between Being Good at What You Do and Being Good at Getting Noticed

April 24, 2025By Strix Coding Team6 min read

Let’s put two businesses side by side. We’ll call them Business A and Business B. Both are located in Texas. Both offer essentially the same service. Both charge similar prices. Both have experienced owners. And both do good work.

There’s just one major difference.

Business A seems to be everywhere. You search Google, and there they are. Their website looks professional. Their Google Business Profile has plenty of reviews. Their pictures look current. Their branding is recognizable. Their social media looks active. You immediately understand what they do and how to contact them.

Business B? You know they’re good because somebody told you. But when you search for them online, you have to work to find information. Their website looks outdated. Google has very few reviews. Their Facebook page hasn’t been updated in months. Their logo looks different depending on where you see it.

Which business do you think gets more opportunities from new customers? Probably Business A. But that doesn’t necessarily mean Business A is better. They may simply be better at getting noticed.

Good Businesses Lose to Visible Businesses Every Day

Being great at what you do doesn’t automatically mean customers will find you. You can have the best tacos in Laredo, be an incredible contractor in San Antonio, an amazing photographer in Corpus Christi, run a fantastic insurance agency in McAllen or build an excellent consulting firm in Austin.

But if someone searches for the service you provide and only sees your competitors, those competitors get the opportunity. Not because the customer rejected you. They never knew you were an option.

That’s a completely different problem.

Think About a Busy Customer

Let’s say someone needs a service during their lunch break. They have 15 minutes. They pull out their phone and search Google. Five companies appear.

They’re probably not going to spend two hours researching every business in the city. They’ll look at a few, check reviews, visit two or three websites, look at pictures and create a mental shortlist.

Your business doesn’t necessarily need every person in the city to know your name. You need the right people to discover you at the right moment. That’s one of the goals of SEO.

Marketing Isn’t Just Advertising

When people hear the word marketing, they sometimes immediately think about Facebook ads, Google ads, billboards or commercials. But marketing starts long before you spend money on advertising.

What happens when someone searches your business? What does your website look like? Is your company easy to understand? Does your branding look professional? Can people find your services? Do you appear in relevant local searches? Do your reviews build confidence?

Your website is marketing. Your Google presence is marketing. Your branding is marketing. Your reviews are marketing. Even the way you explain your services is marketing.

Business A Makes Things Easy

Business A’s biggest advantage isn’t necessarily that its website is prettier. It makes the customer’s decision easier.

The customer searches. They find the company. They understand the service. They see previous work. They read reviews. They trust what they see. They click a button and call.

Business B creates friction: hard to find, an old social page, a slow website, unclear services and few reviews. At some point the customer thinks, “I’ll just call the other company.” Every unnecessary step creates another opportunity for the customer to leave.

Your Branding Matters More Than Just Your Logo

Strong branding creates consistency across your logo, colors, website, social media, business cards, signs, vehicles, advertising, photography and messaging. Over time, customers begin connecting those elements with your company.

At Strix Coding, branding and graphic design isn’t treated as simply creating a logo. The goal is to help businesses create an identity people can recognize and remember.

Your Website Should Help You Compete

A business website should have a strategy behind it. Who are we trying to reach? What services matter most? What questions do customers ask? Which cities do we serve? What action do we want visitors to take? What makes this business different? How are people going to find the website?

At Strix Coding, this is where website design and development connects with SEO and digital marketing. A website shouldn’t just look good. It should help the business compete.

What Happens When Customers Search in Your City?

Customers frequently search locally: “CPA near me,” “Wedding venue Corpus Christi,” “Contractor McAllen,” “Restaurant Laredo,” “Insurance agency San Antonio,” or “Business consultant Austin.”

This is where local SEO becomes important. A business doesn’t always need to compete with every company in America. Sometimes it needs to become more visible to customers right in its own market.

For Texas businesses serving multiple cities, that may also mean developing useful content that clearly communicates where the company operates and what it offers in each market.

Don’t Try to Look Like the Biggest Company

Small businesses sometimes try to make themselves look like huge corporations. That isn’t always necessary. Being local can actually be an advantage.

Your business has its own story, people, experience, customers, personality and connection to the community. Good branding and web design shouldn’t hide those things. It should amplify them.

The goal isn’t necessarily to look like the biggest company. The goal is to look like a company worth choosing.

Technology Can Create Another Advantage

Sometimes the difference between Business A and Business B isn’t just marketing. It’s efficiency. Business A might allow customers to schedule online, request quotes, upload documents, purchase products, track orders, receive automatic updates or make payments.

Depending on the company, technology can make doing business easier. That’s where e-commerce development and custom software can become valuable.

At Strix Coding, the question isn’t “What technology can we add?” It’s “What problem can technology solve?”

Now Compare Your Business

Search for the services you provide. Look at the companies that appear. Visit their websites. Read their reviews. Look at their branding. See how easy it is to contact them.

Then look at your own company. Where are you stronger? Where are they stronger? What information are they giving customers that you aren’t?

This isn’t about copying competitors. It’s about understanding the experience your customers have when they’re deciding between you and someone else. Whether you realize it or not, that comparison is already happening.

Being Better Is Powerful. Being Better and Visible Is Even Better.

There are countless excellent Texas businesses that have grown almost entirely through referrals. That’s something to be proud of. But consider what happens when that reputation is combined with a strong digital presence.

The person who receives the referral Googles you and sees a professional website. The reviews reinforce the recommendation. The branding feels established. The website explains exactly what you do.

Everything confirms what their friend already told them: “These people are good.” That’s when your online presence starts working with your reputation instead of against it.
